All distances are from the Las Vegas Strip. "The Grand Canyon" is 277 miles (446 km) long, so the answer depends on which rim you visit. Most day trips from Las Vegas go to the West Rim because it is the closest, followed by the South Rim, home of the classic national-park viewpoints.
Can you do the Grand Canyon as a day trip from Las Vegas?
Yes. A West Rim coach tour takes 10 to 12 hours door to door with 3 to 4 hours at Eagle Point and Guano Point. A South Rim day tour takes 14 to 15 hours with about 3 hours in the park. If you only have half a day, a helicopter tour has you back at your hotel in about 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
Driving yourself vs. taking a tour
- Driving: the West Rim road is fully paved; you need a car, admission tickets and about 5 hours of driving in one day.
- Coach or small-group tour: hotel pickup, admission and driving handled for you, so you can rest on the way.
- Helicopter: the fastest option, flying over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead to the West Rim in under an hour.
Time zone tip
Arizona does not use daylight saving time. From early March to early November, Grand Canyon West and the South Rim show the same time as Las Vegas; in winter they are one hour ahead. The Navajo Nation (Antelope Canyon area) does use daylight saving time and is one hour ahead of Las Vegas all year, so always check the time zone on your confirmation.
North Rim in 2026
The North Rim reopened on 15 May 2026 after the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, mainly for day use: the historic Grand Canyon Lodge was lost and there is no lodging, fuel or drinking water inside the park there. It closes for winter after 30 November or the first major snowstorm. Day tours from Las Vegas go to the West and South Rims.
